Matthew Stone is a veterinary epidemiologist from New Zealand, and the Deputy Director General – International Standards and Science at the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) at their Paris headquarters. He gained his Bachelor and Master degrees in veterinary science and veterinary epidemiology from Massey University, New Zealand, and after five years in mixed veterinary practice joined the government veterinary authority of New Zealand, the Ministry for Primary Industries. Over a 20 year period Matthew worked in numerous veterinary and management roles, with responsibilities for international trade, surveillance, incursion investigation, incursion response, food safety and animal welfare. He became the New Zealand Delegate to the OIE, and in that capacity served as the Secretary General for the OIE Asia Far East and Oceania region. Matthew has served as President of the Epidemiology Branch of the New Zealand Veterinary Association; and as a member of the Professional Standards Committee of the New Zealand Veterinary Council; the Stakeholder Council for the New Zealand Tb Free and National Animal Identification and Traceability programmes; and the Wellington SPCA Board.
