Dr Marc Sprenger, a medical doctor and expert in infectious diseases, epidemiology and global health, is Director of the Antimicrobial Resistance Secretariat at the World Health Organization in Geneva since September 2015 and is responsible for the coordination and implementation of the Global Action Plan on AMR. From 2010 till 2015, Dr Sprenger was elected for five years as Director of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). From 2003 till 2010, Dr Sprenger was Director General of the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM). As Director of Health (1999-2003) of the Dutch National Healthcare Insurance Board, he provided guidance on health care system and insurance issues, including reimbursement of new pharmaceuticals. As head of the Centre for Infectious Disease Epidemiology, RIVM (1993-1999), Dr Sprenger was responsible for establishing a new centre of national coordination of infectious disease epidemiology and initiated the European Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System (EARSS). Dr Sprenger studied General Medicine at University of Maastricht, specializing as a medical microbiologist at Erasmus Medical Center (Rotterdam) and obtained a PhD in Epidemiology at Erasmus University.
